Letter of Invitation for applications to Global Youth Summit in 2021

Young Adults from Mennonite Church Canada:

It is with great excitement and anticipation that we invite applications for young adult representatives to the Global Youth Summit (GYS) on behalf of Mennonite Church Canada (MC Canada) and the five Regional Churches (Mennonite Church Alberta, Mennonite Church British Columbia, Mennonite Church Eastern Canada, Mennonite Church Manitoba and Mennonite Church Saskatchewan).

“The Global Youth Summit is a special time when young Anabaptists from the entire world come together. The next Global Youth Summit will be held 2–5 July 2021 in Salatiga, Indonesia. These three days are a time where the Lord allows us to mutually bless each other, and to share news, experiences, and the struggles that we live in our different continents and countries, in order to enrich the faith of all.

This event occurs four days before the Mennonite World Conference (MWC) Assembly Gathered, and this allows us to connect as a single family, one body, the church. First we build community with other young people at GYS, and then together with the entire family of the church at Assembly Gathered. The theme of GYS 2021 is Life in the Spirit: Learn, Serve, Worship.

Delegates at GYS have the role of representing their nationwide churches and countries. After GYS, the delegates’ role continues as they have the responsibility to share with their national church and young people what they have learned. This is very important to give continuity to the work and projects of Young Anabaptists (YABs), who need the support and help of all young people in MWC.”[1]

MC Canada is looking for one young adult from each of the five Regional Churches to represent the nationwide church at GYS, and also to attend the MWC Assembly a few days later. After the five representatives have been chosen, one will be appointed the official role of delegate. This means that they will be attending the delegate sessions rather than the general workshops. However, the five representatives will all work together on the GYS project that will be assigned to the delegate prior to GYS. The five representatives will also travel and attend the MWC Assembly together. They will write a report to MC Canada and their Regional Churches after their travels. MC Canada asks that the person chosen as delegate commit to a three-year term as representative to the network of Young Anabaptists after GYS.

If you are chosen as the representative of your Regional Church, the costs of the application to the GYS, MWC, and vaccination and travel costs will be covered through MC Canada, up to $5,000 per person. The age requirement is 18-30 as of July 2, 2021. Applicants must have a valid passport at the time of travel and be members of an affiliated congregation of MC Canada.

Please submit your application using the online form at the large link below, by September 30, 2019. The representatives, including the delegate, will be announced in January 2020. If you have any questions about the application process, YABs, or GYS, please feel free to contact Joint Council Member Andrea De Avila (andreadeavila@mymts.net).
