International Witness

Praise God for the leadership team growing within the Friends of Grace network in Thailand.  Pray for Witness workers Tom and Christine Poovong as they work with and mentor new church leaders.

Prayer: Pray that new believers will be drawn to these fledgling congregations as they reach out into their communities.

Witness Sook Kyoung Park spends four afternoons per week hosting students for several hours of conversation, activities and English practice at her home in Chuncheon, South Korea. Sook Kyoung models restorative practices in communication and helps the students practice skills of good communication. She uses education practices that focus on cooperation, which is in contrast to the relatively competitive nature of the school experience.

Prayer: Please pray that these students will carry this message of peace into their families.

Sunju Moon, director of the Korean Anabaptist Centre (KAC), gives leadership to this resource centre. Besides helping the newly formed Mennonite Church South Korea (MCSK) she spends much of her time connecting people from other churches and denominations with the resources they are looking for as they incorporate Anabaptist teaching into their churches. KAC now has more than 150 published titles of Anabaptist books as well as many online resources.

Indigenous-Settler Relations

Declaration promise in Throne Speech

In November we invited churches to pray and e-mail Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ensure that the Government of Canada prioritized the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the Speech from the Throne. Great news—it happened! On Thursday, Dec. 5, the Government promised to codevelop and pass legislation to implement the Declaration in Canadian law by the end of 2020. We’ve got a way to go on this journey, but this is deeply encouraging. Please e-mail Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ( and the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, minister of crown-Indigenous relations ( to thank them for making this profound commitment.

Crimes against First Nations children

In 2016, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled the Government of Canada is guilty of racial discrimination against First Nations children by “willfully and recklessly” underfunding child welfare and medical services, resulting in family separations and contributing to child deaths. The Government was ordered to immediately stop such practices and to compensate victims. Yet despite eight non-compliance orders (most recently, September 2019), the government has failed to respond. According to federal government stats, over 50 per cent of children in foster care nationwide are Indigenous.

Prayer: Pray that Canada complies with all the Tribunal’s rulings. Let us pray for all children in foster care (according to federal government stats, over 50 per cent are Indigenous nationwide) and their grieving families. For more info, see

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT): delegation to the United States/Mexico borderlands

As we rejoice in the birth of the migrant Christ, we can’t help but turn our hearts to the many children and families in the United States/Mexico borderlands whose lives are turned upside-down by violent state policy. Between Feb. 19-29, 2020, CPT will lead a delegation into this zone of conflict. Please consider joining! You’ll meet those directly affected by public policy—including migrants, local residents, activists, and law enforcement personnel; you’ll walk desert trails, visit detention and human-resource centers; you’ll travel back and forth across the border and see firsthand the impact of militarism on migrants and border communities. Peaceful at Heart cuts through regular conversation on Christian masculinity and offers a uniquely Anabaptist perspective. Rather than supporting patriarchy and nationalism commonly advanced in traditional Christian thought, this volume draws on an Anabaptist faith, which invites men to experience God's call to live at peace and be peacemakers.
