International Witness

Mennonite group in Seoul studying Jeremiah

Please pray for the Mennonite group in Seoul that Witness workers Bock Ki Kim and Sook Kyoung Park give leadership to, that they may grow in spirit. This year they will study the prophet Jeremiah. Pray for each member to listen to God's voice as they study the Bible in community.

Pantoja shares peacemaking resources as MWC rep in Hong Kong

Witness worker Joji Pantoja is Mennonite World Conference (MWC) Peace Commission Chair. She participated with a group from MWC on request from churches in Hong Kong wishing to learn about perspectives on Anabaptist peacemaking. MWC has more on this story. Pray for these brothers and sisters and those involved in supporting these congregations.

Manitoba pastor teaching courses at MKC in Ethopia

Pray for Lynell Bergen, pastor at Hope Mennonite Church in Winnipeg, as she teaches several courses at  Meserete Kristos College in Ethiopia. Here is her prayer request: “Students are gathering from their homes across the country after the Christmas break. Pray for joy as they dive back into studies, for patience in their work (and patience with teachers who have funny Canadian accents), and for strength and wisdom for the teachers and staff here.”

Lao pastors travel to Thailand to teach Anabaptism to local church leaders

Lao Mennonite pastors from Mennonite Church Eastern Canada will take part in a service trip in February to Thailand and Laos to teach Palmer Becker’s Anabaptist Essentials as requested by church leaders there. Pray that God will guide preparations made for these classes by Thailand Witness workers Tom and Christine Poovong.

Indigenous-Settler Relations

Road trippin’ to Sioux Falls: Indigenous conversations on healing and wholeness

Mennonite Church Canada’s Indigenous-Settler Relations (ISR) is organizing a bus journey to take 50 Indigenous and settler persons to this year’s NAIITS gathering in Sioux Falls, South Dakota—June 4-6, 2020. Would you like to join us? NAIITS is a Christian Indigenous Learning Community that hosts theological gatherings intended for pastors and activists, young and old. ISR wants to bring a diverse group of friends from across our nationwide church to attend this event that will explore “Conversations on Health and Wholeness.” The bus ride from Winnipeg is free, registration is covered, and we’re looking to crash at a local church (dorm rooms are an option, but at your own expense). If interested, please e-mail Steve Heinrichs for more details (sheinrichs@mennonitechurch.ca). It’s going to be a lot of fun!

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 18-25 is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The roots of the "Week of Prayer" go back to the 1800s; it is one of the oldest, most widely observed ecumenical events in the world. We are all encouraged to let the entire year be permeated by the spirit of this Week. Find resources for the week by visiting www.commonword.ca/go/1453

Share Your Works

Did you write an original resource for Advent or Christmas? Or maybe you’re working on something for Lent. CommonWord would love to share it further by posting it on our site.  Please see www.commonword.ca/go/1666 for more information about our community-developed materials.

Featured Resource:

Participating in this six-week experience will take you on a journey of discovery and challenge. As you pray with the scripture texts for Lent, you will be invited to consider how God is present in the gritty or difficult places in life in order to find grace and hope. Visit www.commonword.ca/go/1436 to participate.
