International Witness

Pantojas provide earthquake relief in Philippines

Witness workers Dann and Joji Pantoja, with PeaceBuilders Community, Inc., continue to be part of earthquake relief efforts in Mindanao, Philippines. The region experienced three magnitude 6 earthquakes in October. Local Davao churches and Bangsamoro Muslim partners are working together to provide relief in the mountainous areas most affected, especially among the Obo Manobo Indigenous people.  This is part of the Pantojas’ long-term inclusive development initiative in this community. For more information visit their website here.

Prayer: Pray that people of various backgrounds will joyfully work together. Pray for the Obo Manobo people who have lost homes and farms due to earthquakes and landslides.

Request for prayer for new leadership of AIMM

Rod Hollinger-Janzen, executive coordinator of Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission, one of Mennonite Church Canada’s ministry partners, plans to retire at the end of December 2020.  A search committee is forming that includes three leaders from Africa and two from North America. AIMM invites our prayers as they seek to fill this vital role.

Executive minister witness to faith of Mennonites in Burkina Faso

From Oct. 23 to Nov. 5, Mennonite Church Canada Executive Minister Doug Klassen was in Burkina Faso for the Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission partnership council meetings. The purpose of the meetings is to gather African, North American and European church leaders together to pray together, to share what God is doing in their context and to seek ways to mutually support what God is calling each do together. Klassen said, “Terrorist activity, government instability, systemic poverty and food security are just a few of the challenges that (Mennonites in Burkina Faso) face daily, yet they abound in faith for today and hope for God’s future to be realized all over Africa.”

Prayer: Please pray for peace in Burkina Faso. Terrorist activity continues to violently upset the most vulnerable people of the country.  Pray for the “peace that passes understanding” to be experienced throughout the country.

Indigenous-Settler Relations

Unsettling the Word now in paperback edition

We have just released a beautiful new paperback edition of Unsettling the Word. Great for group or individual study, pick up a copy here. Sara Stratton, Reconciliation and Indigenous Justice Animator for the United Church, says, “Unsettling the Word helps Christians take responsibility for the damage our sacred texts have done to Indigenous peoples and Creation. More importantly, it empowers us to read those texts – and act on them – in a profoundly different, restorative way.”

Walking in a good way

Over 200 evangelicals, both Indigenous and Settler, gathered at Mini-maawanji’itiwag (“Coming together in a Good Way”) this last weekend for two full days of learning, exploring how the church can respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Mainline churches have been in this conversation for years, and now an ever-growing contingent of evangelicals are taking up the good work of putting heart and flesh into the restorative paths outlined by the TRC. Steve Heinrichs led a workshop and other Mennonite friends were present. Lots of listening around tables, breaking bread together and discerning next steps. We give thanks for what the Spirit is doing in the larger church!
